High Peak MP Ruth George has written to the directors of Buxton’s Serpentine Community Farm pledging her support and help for their campaign against council plans to sell the land for housing.
Ruth said: “I regularly walk through the Serpentine with my family and find it hard to believe that the site is being considered as a possible housing site, knowing how much time and effort volunteers have put into restoring the site.
“The farm has been developed in a purpose built growing space with good access for all. To suggest moving what has quickly become an established part of the Buxton life to another area of the town makes no sense at all.
“Given the strong views expressed by English Heritage (now Historic England) which led to the withdrawal of similar plans in 2012 and huge amount of work undertaken by your team of volunteers, I am surprised that anyone would consider that building houses on the site was a sensible option.”
Ruth will be making her opposition clear to both the Leader and Chief Executive of High Peak Borough Council.
