Buxton MP Ruth George was in Buxton town centre on Saturday backing the shopworkers union Usdaw’s Save Our Shops campaign.
Ruth said: “It was great to be out on a joint campaign with colleagues from Usdaw and Buxton Labour Party. There was a lot of concern about the future of Buxton town centre and people were really pleased to hear that I’m getting Buxton retailers, police and the borough council together to plan improvements.
“It’s clear from talking to local residents and shoppers that they are very concerned about the impact that the closure of M&S would have on the town.
“Our High Streets all need a boost and I’m happy to work with Glossop and other town centres too.
“We need action to create a more level playing field between high street and online shopping if we are to breathe life back into our high streets. Retail is a key part of the economy providing jobs and income for millions of families.”
Ruth’s meeting for Buxton retailers and traders is on Thursday 7 March at 7pm to 8.30 in the Lower Room, Buxton Methodist Church, Chapel Street, Buxton SK17 6HX.
A specialist police officer from Buxton’s crime prevention team will be attendance to discuss how police and retailers can best work together to prevent crime. High Peak Borough Council’s Executive Director (Place), Dai Larner, will attend to discuss the Council’s bid to the Future High Streets Fund for Buxton.
Ruth has asked anyone who is unable to attend to send her their views in advance by email to firstname.lastname@example.org
