Letter to Secretary of State of Work and Pensions from Ruth George MP

Here’s my letter to Esther McVey after she accused me of “putting across fake news” on Universal Credit and Free School Meals on Monday (March 26).  I hope the factual and fully substantiated information I’ve given will make her realise that her government’s policy will mean that over a million children in poverty will not receive a Free School Meal – in areas where Universal Credit is rolling out, it will affect them next term.

That is why I’ve asked her to delay the policy until September and look at the implications for poverty.

I hope it will have an effect.  I have offered further information or a private discussion if she wishes.

I can do no more.
